Comments from The Rose Phantom…
“Bury Me in the Sky” is ultimately about death. It’s an acceptance of death, and preparing to say goodbye. In the meantime, the acceptance of death raises some questions… When will my soul take flight? When will I see the light? When will I breathe the night? It’s a conversation with myself – hence the mirrored image for the music video.
“Inside This Box” is a track that’s been on the back-burner for a couple years. It finally found its proper home on this EP. I wanted the video to be very literal… me inside a box. First things first… where am I going to find a big enough box?!? Luckily, a local refrigerator store let me have my pick through dozens of boxes. It was a difficult video to film. As for the aesthetic, I wanted the video to look as if it were security camera footage, suggesting that I am someone’s prisoner.
“Kill Everything” is one of my more humorous videos. Handing out flyers that say “KILL EVERYTHING”?!? Ridiculous! That’s comedy right there. Aside from it being humorous, that’s simply the vision that came to me for this video. It’s also an exercise in freedom of speech, which is something we can never let them take away. And of course, “Kill Everything” isn’t meant to be taken literally. The song is simply reflecting on aspects of yourself that were ‘killed’ by someone else. Kill my brain, soul, heart, love… “Kill Everything”.
“Day of Death” is another back-burner track, originally composed for 2023’s “V O O D O O” album. The track took a long time to get right. A lot of hours went into the mixing of this one. I’m sure I’d still be mixing it today… but you have to know when to let go. So, what’s this one about, exactly? Death. In particular, the slow death of a relationship… “it’s our day of death”. Love can be very misleading, very contradictory. “Day of Death” is the realization that what you’re hanging on to is emptiness: “I’m hanging on to nothing”.
So, for the video, TRP is back in his favorite cemetery, wearing a ridiculous, yet theatrical, skeleton jumpsuit. It’s also the debut of a fully shaved head! Out of all the hairstyles over the years, I had never once shaved my head. It was the last ‘hairstyle’ to explore.
